Guyana has told the International Court of Justice that a long-running border dispute with Venezuela threatens more than 70 percent of its territory, as hearings continue in The Hague.

The case centers on the resource-rich Essequibo region, which both countries claim.

Guyana is asking the court to uphold an 1899 ruling that set the boundary largely in its favour, while Venezuela argues that decision is invalid and should be revisited.

The dispute, rooted in colonial history, has persisted for decades, with Guyana seeking a final legal resolution and Venezuela maintaining its claim to the territory.
