5,802 persons were arrested and 3,552 (61.2%) charged during the current State of Emergency.
These figures were revealed by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar as the SoE draws to an end.
She believes these arrests have led to a decrease in crime across all police divisions and warns that Government will not hesitate to use “harsh and brutal measures” against criminals.
The PM adds that work is continuing with foreign law enforcement agencies to ensure “the local drug mafia and those who believe they are untouchable because of their ill-gotten wealth will be prosecuted in the same manner as any other citizen.”
Additionally, Government will declassify and release a report showing the results of the wider actions pursued by the protective services to reduce crime and criminality.
According to the PM, these wider actions were carried out simultaneously during the SoE period while the main threat was being addressed.
She adds that the decision to release the report is in the interest of transparency and accountability, and comes on the advice of the Attorney General.
