Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley is calling for major reform of the United Nations Security Council, including limits on the use of the veto in cases of mass atrocities.
Addressing the UN General Assembly, she said Barbados is backing the Franco-Mexican initiative, which urges permanent Security Council members to voluntarily refrain from using the veto in such cases.
She also renewed calls for permanent African representation on the Council and a stronger voice for Small Island Developing States.
Ms. Mottley argued that the current 15-member Security Council no longer reflects today’s global realities, saying the world has changed but the Council has not.
