TTCB President Azim Bassarath is calling for greater investment in grassroots sports development.

This, he says, can be a powerful tool for engaging young people and tackling crime in the country.

Speaking with 103.1FM News following the TTCB’s National Awards last night, Mr Bassarath explained how sporting organisations can play a greater role in the process.

Mr Bassarath said the board already secures sponsorship for approximately 90% of its youth tournaments, while government support helps prepare national teams for regional competition.

He said the TTCB is also developing plans to expand youth cricket programmes, as it looks to develop the next generation.

Meanwhile, last night’s ceremony was an occasion for recognition and celebration for local cricketers.

Among the big winners were:

  • Amir Jangoo – 2026 International Cricketer of the Year
  • Joshua Da Silva – 2026 National Cricketer of the Year
  • Nu-Iron Queen’s Park Cricket Club – 2026 Club of the Year

On the women’s side, Karishma Ramharack captured International Player of the Year.

In the Premiership Division, Ricky Jaipaul earned the Male Cricketer of the Year honour, while PowerGen’s Leandra Ramdeen was named Female Cricketer of the Year.

Arnaldo Premchand was recognised as National Emerging Youth Cricketer of the Year.
