All scrap yards are being asked to temporarily suspend operations and close their gates.
The Scrap Iron Dealers Association says the call was made pending the renewal or extension of operational licences required for the industry to function legally.
Operating without a valid licence is prohibited, meaning dealers cannot legally purchase, collect, process or export scrap metal.
Association President Allan Ferguson says they are committed to responsible business practices and full compliance with all laws, and so, have advised all members to suspend trading and collection activities until further notice.
While he acknowledges the significant impact of this temporary suspension, he says they remain committed to working closely and collaboratively with the Government to achieve an early and mutually beneficial resolution.
