Suriname has declared a bird flu outbreak after more than 5,000 chickens died at a poultry farm in Paramaribo.
The Agriculture Ministry said stringent measures have been taken to prevent further spread of the virus.
It noted that high temperatures can increase poultry deaths, particularly among broiler chickens, with heat stress and disease among possible causes.
Suriname’s Agriculture Minister said the country had already banned poultry products and hatching eggs from Europe.
He noted that the country was among the few countries in South America where the disease had not been detected for a long time.
Officials have confirmed that human samples tested so far have been negative.
