The organisers of last Sunday’s Ganesh immersion ceremony at the Valencia River have responded to concerns raised by members of the public.
In a social media video, a woman questioned why the murtis were immersed in an area used by the public for recreation.
However, spiritual head of the Shri Siddhi Vinaayak Organization and the Vishwanath Hindu Social and Cultural Organization, Pundit Doodnath Rampersad, took to Facebook to clarify the matter.
He said they had the required permissions, cleaned the site after the event, and did not restrict public access to the river.
He said the murtis are made from biodegradable, non-toxic clay and have begun dissolving, but added that the slower river flow means the process may take a few days.
Pundit Doodnath added that the site will remain under observation, with the organisation continuing to monitor the murtis as part of its environmental responsibilities.
