An Otaheite man has been granted $150,000 bail after appearing in court for fraud.

The TTPS says it received a report alleging that the accused had obtained goods using dishonoured cheques, totalling $287,700.

They went to his residence and executed three warrants of apprehension for the offences.

David Bhagwandass pleaded Not Guilty when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Deborah Quintin to answer three financial crime charges.

In addition to bail, the matter was adjourned to October 29th.

Meanwhile, the Fraud Squad is advising business owners, vendors, and members of the public to exercise caution when accepting cheques as payment for high-value goods or services.

It reiterates the importance of verifying payment before releasing goods, and says cheques should be given time to fully clear with before handing over merchandise, property, or documents of ownership.

For significant transactions, vendors are encouraged to request safer and certified payment methods such as certified bank drafts, manager’s cheques, or direct electronic bank transfers.

Vendors are also being advised to request valid government-issued identification (National ID, Passport, or Driver’s License) and ensure the details match the cheque holder’s information.
