Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says proposed changes under the Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill are intended to address inequalities in the distribution of resources.
The Bill was passed in the House of Representatives last night, with amendments, following a vote of 27 in favour, 11 against, and no abstentions.
During her contribution to the debate, the Prime Minister said the changes are aimed at ensuring resources are distributed more fairly.
Mrs Persad-Bissessar also criticized the previous government for delaying local government elections several times.
She said the new legislation is intended to improve the way local communities are managed and services are delivered.
