Local Government Minister Khadijah Ameen has started the debate on the Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill 2026 in the Lower House.

The Bill is proposing major changes to local government boundaries, which will make Chaguanas a city, while Barataria, Couva, St. Augustine and Sangre Grande would become boroughs.

Minister Ameen told the House that the changes will address unequal representation.

Minister Ameen said while the changes will affect municipal structure and boundaries, the Elections and Boundaries Commission will remain responsible for managing the electoral process.

Minister Ameen also reassured local government workers that no one will lose their job or employment benefits as a result of the proposed changes.
