Economist Dr Vaalmikki Arjoon is predicting that the upcoming national Budget will once again focus on economic diversification, job creation and measures to ease financial pressure on vulnerable citizens.
Speaking with 103.1FM News today, he says this must be done while carefully managing the country’s finances, which includes better use of its limited natural gas resources.
Dr Arjoon also hopes to see the Budget address the shortage of foreign exchange.
Dr Arjoon adds that while he does not expect any major new taxes or an increase in fuel prices, international oil prices and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could put added pressure on the local economy, with shipping delays affecting businesses.
He is also anticipating measures to ease financial pressure on vulnerable citizens, including possible support through social grants.
