A man was shot by law enforcement near the White House in Washington, D.C. on Monday after allegedly opening fire on officers close to the Washington Monument, the U.S. Secret Service has confirmed.
Deputy Director Matt Quinn said plainclothes agents first spotted the man around 3:30 p.m. in the White House area and observed what appeared to be a concealed firearm.
Uniformed officers were alerted and moved in to approach him.
Quinn said the suspect attempted to flee and then opened fire on officers, who returned fire. The man was taken to hospital, but his condition is unknown.
A minor and another bystander were also transported to hospital after being struck, though it is not yet clear whose gunfire caused the injuries.
The White House was briefly placed on lockdown while security forces responded, though President Donald Trump continued a scheduled event inside the complex.
Police say the incident is under investigation, with no immediate link confirmed to the president.
