US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” following the collapse of trade talks with Canada.
The order was signed this afternoon at the Oval office.
According to BBC News, President Trump said the name change will take immediate effect and has directed US officials to update the country’s geographic names database.
The US President also has his sights on renaming an Ocean in America’s name.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney says the name Lake Ontario has been used for more than 400 years.
In a social media post, he pointed to the lake’s Indigenous origins and said the name existed before both Canadian Confederation and U.S. independence.
Mr Carney says Canadians will continue to call it Lake Ontario.
