The Senate was abruptly adjourned yesterday to a date yet to be fixed after meeting for less than an hour.
Leader of Government Business Senator Darrell Allahar offered no explanation.
Opposition Senator Amery Browne said the Opposition had been informed the sitting would end early, but no reasons were provided.
The development comes amid controversy involving Opposition Senators Faris Al-Rawi and Janelle John-Bates, who were recently referred to Parliament’s Privileges Committee.
Before the adjournment, the session included the tabling of the Victims’ Rights Bill by Justice Minister Devesh Maharaj.
“A justice system is not judged by the elegance of its procedures but by the humanity of its outcomes,” he told the Senate.
“This Bill ensures that victims are no longer invisible within our laws. They are recognized, protected, informed, and empowered. They are, at last, where they always should have been: at the center of the justice system.”
