PNM Senator Janelle John-Bates has issued a public apology and has announced her resignation amid growing controversy surrounding role in a key Parliamentary committee.
Ms John-Bates has faced allegations that she improperly assisted the former Health Minister Terrance Deyalsingh by editing his witness statement before his appearance before the Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC).
The PNM subsequently removed her from the PAAC by the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Dr Amery Browne.
Speaking in the Senate this morning, John-Bates acknowledge weeks of public criticism and concern linked to matters involving the PAAC.
She said her involvement has contributed to a level of controversy that risked distracting from the work of Parliament and issues affecting citizens.
Senator John-Bates stressed that since being sworn in, she has carried out her duties with integrity, in good faith, and in the public interest.
However, she offered what she called “an unequivocal apology” to the people of Trinidad and Tobago and fellow members of the Senate.
Senator John-Bates rejected allegations of wrongdoing, firmly denying that she conspired to commit contempt of Parliament.
In her statement, Ms John-Bates reaffirm her commitment to principles of integrity, fairness and respect for the rule of law, which she ways has guided her professional life.
Despite this, she confirmed she has formally submitted her resignation to the Leader of the Opposition.
Her resignation comes as the matter continues to generate national attention.
