The family of murdered 12-year-old Mercedez Layne says it has confidence in the justice system and remains hopeful that accountability will follow her tragic death.
In a public statement, the family also thanked law enforcement officers, volunteers and members of the public who assisted during the search for the child.
They praised the response of the TTPS, saying investigators treated the case with urgency from the outset, pursued every available lead and kept the family informed throughout the investigation.
Mercedez’s body was discovered in a forested area in Erin on Sunday, one day after she was reported missing.
Meanwhile, a 26-year-old man from Palo Seco is expected to appear before a Master of the High Court today, to answer to a charge of murder.
