The House of Representatives has approved a three-month extension of the State of Emergency, following a debate that continued into the early hours of this morning.
The motion, piloted by Attorney General John Jeremie, was passed with 28 votes in favour and 12 against.
Contributing to the debate in Parliament last night, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said constitutional rights are not absolute.
Defending the measures, the Prime Minister maintained that the Government is acting within the emergency provisions of the Constitution.
The Prime Minister said freedoms such as assembly and speech are subject to regulation under the Constitution.
Mrs Persad-Bissessar said citizens retain the right to seek redress through the courts, if they believe their rights have been affected.
