Efforts are underway to strengthen security at the nation’s prisons, as authorities continue to intercept contraband entering the facilities.
Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander told 103.1FM News this morning that the immediate focus is on strengthening the prison workforce.
Minister Alexander said recruitment is ongoing, while the Government also plans to modernise outdated prison surveillance and security systems.
He adds that funding will be needed for the upgrades, but has not confirmed whether additional resources will be provided in the upcoming Budget.
This follows concerns from Acting Commissioner of Prisons Elvin Scanterbury, over continued attempts to bring prohibited items into prisons.
