Guyana’s President Dr Irfaan Ali has condemned what he calls a “provocative” display by Venezuela, asserting its claim to Guyana’s territory, and the use of regional platforms to promote that claim.

In a letter to the chair of CARICOM, Dr Terrance Drew, President Ali raised concern about actions by Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez during a recent engagement in Barbados.

She was seen wearing a pin, with imagery depicting the Essequibo region as part of Venezuela.

President Ali warned that using CARICOM engagements to advance a territorial claim could be interpreted as acceptance and may undermine proceedings before the International Court of Justice.

Guyana maintains the boundary was settled by an 1899 arbitral award and says it remains committed to a peaceful resolution under international law, while urging regional leaders to uphold support for its sovereignty.
