Government says it stands ready to provide any assistance requested by Venezuela following two significant earthquakes.

The tremors, later confirmed as 7.2 and 7.5, caused significant damage.

In a brief address to the nation late Wednesday, Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency.

She said the earthquakes caused damages in several states, but did not give any figures regarding that or any casualties.

They also damaged the country’s main airport, Simón Bolívar International Airport, severely enough to lead to its closure.

“We urge our population to remain calm. We urge unity,” said Rodríguez.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs said it continues to monitor the situation closely through its diplomatic mission in Caracas, which it said was not significantly impacted by the event.

It added, “in the spirit of the enduring friendship and close bilateral ties between our two nations, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago stands prepared to provide any requested support and assistance to the Venezuelan authorities, where possible.”
