The registration of pharmaceuticals came under scrutiny today as a parliamentary committee questioned apparent gaps in the Health Ministry’s records.
During a sitting of the Public Administration & Appropriations Committee, Chairman Jagdeo Singh flagged the limited recorded involvement of the Drug Advisory Committee.
The DAC is a statutory body that reviews all pharmaceuticals and advises the Health Minister, who then gives final approval for registration.
He said the records show 365 pharmaceuticals being registered, but only one documented instance of the DAC being involved.
Mr Singh said further examination will continue to determine if statutory procedures governing pharmaceutical registration were properly followed.
