The EMA has praised the swift action of wildlife enforcement officers following a suspected sea turtle poaching incident at Lambeau Beach, Tobago.
Two persons were reportedly held following the discovery of a dead sea turtle, turtle meat and eggs believed to have been unlawfully removed from a nesting site.
The EMA says the incident demonstrates the critical role that enforcement personnel play in safeguarding T&T’s biodiversity and ensuring that environmental laws are upheld.
It reminds that sea turtles are protected under local law and that hunting, killing, and other disturbances threatens vulnerable populations and undermines conservation efforts.
Violations under the Environmental Management Act (Chap. 35:05) may result in fines of up to $100,000 and two years’ imprisonment.
