Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles is calling for unity and responsible leadership following the deadly Belmont shooting that claimed the lives of two-year-old Akini Kafi, his father Akil Kafi, and Anthony Wilson.

In a statement, Beckles described the tragedy as heartbreaking and urged the country to rise above politics to confront the national crime crisis.

“We must rise above this crime epidemic. We must also rise above petty politics. Crime knows no politician, no party, and no colour. It is a national crisis that continues to destroy families and communities across Trinidad and Tobago,” she stated.

She also condemned inflammatory remarks made by a junior government minister, saying such comments offer no comfort to grieving families.

“Those comments bring no comfort to grieving families and contribute nothing to the urgent task of addressing violence in our society. Even as we reject such behaviour, we must uphold respect for our nation and for one another,” she said.

Beckles reiterated the Opposition’s willingness to work with the Government to address violent crime and called for stronger community support and opportunities for young people.

“I maintain the position of the Opposition that we stand ready to work with the Government to address this scourge. The safety of our citizens must come before politics, and the wellbeing of our youth demands responsible leadership from all sides,” she stated.

“We must return to the love of community that once grounded us. We must do better for our young people, offering them opportunity, guidance, and hope instead of fear and despair.”
