The National Gas Company says gas pricing, not supply volumes, was the main issue behind Methanex’s decision to indefinitely idle its Titan plant.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Company said it offered the same contracted gas volumes and was willing to continue talks, but Methanex was seeking a much lower price.

NGC noted that it could not agree to a price below its costs, but remains open to further discussions aimed at a workable agreement.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal is confident that Methanex’s decision to idle its Titan methanol plant in Trinidad and Tobago will not be permanent.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Dr Moonilal said the Government has taken note of the decision, describing it as part of Methanex’s global business strategy, rather than a move driven solely by conditions in Trinidad and Tobago.

He said the decision to idle the plant keeps the door open for a possible restart.

Dr Moonilal said discussions with all parties will continue.
