A strike has shut down the Long Island Rail Road, leaving thousands of New York commuters with a limited bus service, which can only carry a fraction of passengers.
AP News reported that about 3,500 workers walked out on Saturday over pay and work rule disputes, marking the first LIRR strike in more than 30 years.
Federal labour officials began negotiations on Sunday with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has urged commuters to work from home, and called on unions and MTA to come to an agreement, warning that an extended shutdown would cause widespread disruption.
