Former Police Commissioner Gary Griffith is warning that tackling corruption within the police service is critical to reducing fear of crime in Trinidad and Tobago.
Speaking on Tobago Updates on Tuesday, Griffith said lowering crime statistics alone is not enough to make citizens feel safe.
He stressed that authorities must confront what he described as “the enemy within,” pointing to the possibility of internal corruption undermining public trust.
“Until you try to deal with the enemy within the police service and try to show that we intend to do customer service training, public relations, polygraph testing, drug testing of police officers–which is things I would have done,” Griffith said.
“Until you do that, the public is going to believe that there are rogue elements in the Police Service that you cannot control, and you are allowing it to happen.”
