The group, Fishermen and Friends of the Sea, is calling for more information on a recent oil spill in the Gulf of Paria.
Yesterday, the Energy Ministry issued a statement saying action was taken after the spill in the Main Field was detected on the morning of May 1st.
It says chemical dispersant was deployed approximately six to eight nautical miles from the Trinidad/Venezuelan border.
The source of the leak was also reportedly identified and repaired by May 2nd with the spillage itself estimated to be about 10 barrels of oil.
In a statement, FFOS accused the Government of failing to notify the public, claiming the information was only released after Venezuela raised an alarm.
It is now calling for additional details regarding the incident, including:
โข The exact location of the source of the oil spill and the cause.
โข The immediate publication of all oil spill reports, spill trajectory models, and environmental assessments related to this incident.
โข Full disclosure of the chemical dispersants used by name, volume used, nature, and their potential impacts on human health and marine ecosystems.
โข A public review of the effectiveness and transparency of the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan.
โข Who is paying for the rehabilitation and clean-up of this oil spill in accordance with the Water Pollution Rules?
