Javelin world champion Keshorn Walcott was among the 65 athletes and sporting bodies that received grants from the Ministry of Sport on Wednesday in Tacarigua.

A total of $3 million in grants was distributed to aid athletes and sporting bodies in assisting with competition, training, travel expenses, and other amenities.

Sport Minister Phillip Watts called on those receiving grants to use the finances wisely.

“Today’s grant is not a handout. It is an investment of taxpayers’ resources into your talent, you discipline and your potential to inspire a nation,” he said.

National boxer Tianna Guy said government’s support is “crucial” for her preparation for the CAC Games in August this year.

“I want to say thank you to the Ministry and the Minister for the grant. This grant is really, reaaly crucial for my preparation, as one of the issues that we have in the wider sporting community, and not only boxing, is the lack of high-level training partners at home all the time,” she said.

“With this grant, I will be able to go to tournaments, go to camps, and more or less, start my preparation for CAC Games. Now, the pathway to the Olympics starts with the CAC Games.”
