The US Supreme Court has upheld birthright citizenship, rejecting an executive order from President Donald Trump.

The order sought to deny citizenship to children born in the United States to undocumented or temporary migrants.

In a divided ruling, the court reaffirmed that, under the 14th Amendment, most people born in the US are automatically citizens, with limited exceptions.

Three conservative justices dissented, arguing the ruling misapplies the Constitution.

The case stemmed from a 2025 executive order signed by President Trump aimed at ending automatic citizenship for children of non-citizens.

The ruling effectively blocks the policy.
