“Food security is national security” – This sentiment was expressed by Agriculture Minister Ravi Ratiram on World Food Day today.
This day is meant to raise awareness about global hunger, promote food security, and encourage sustainable food systems.
During a commemorative tree planting ceremony at the Botanic Gardens, Mr Ratiram said a country that can feed itself stands on firmer ground when faced with challenges such as global supply disruptions, rising prices or the impacts of climate change.
He added that innovation, investment and collaboration are essential to increasing domestic food production, which will in turn reduce the dependence on imported food.
The Minister pointed to key initiatives such as the Public Fruit and Food Orchards Initiative, which he said is expected to expand to the Queen’s Park Savannah, schools, housing developments and other public spaces.
There is also a proposal to expand the Agricultural Internship Programme from 30 to 100 interns, to expose more young people to opportunities in agriculture.
