Concerns are being raised by TTUTA about conditions at 11 government and government-assisted schools, as the new academic year gets underway.
According to a Guardian Media report, the union said its officials found issues including shortages of furniture, ongoing repairs, pest problems and other safety concerns.
The named schools are:
- Arima Girls’ Government School
- Arima North Secondary School
- Malabar Composite Secondary School
- San Rafael RC Primary School
- Tamana RC Primary School
- Brazil RC Primary School
- South East Port of Spain Government School
- St Hilda’s Government School
- Gloster Lodge Moravian School
- Cunupia Government Primary School
- Fyzabad Anglican Secondary School
The Union stressed that it is not seeking to be antagonistic, but wants the concerns addressed to protect students and teachers.
TTUTA claims some school repairs started too late and is urging the Education Ministry to make use of the date generated by Schools Infrastructure and Management System, to identify and complete needed repairs before each school term.
Yesterday, The Ministry of Education reported that all 777 schools are open, and outstanding repairs at some facilities will continue after school hours and on weekends.
