Trinidad and Tobago’s Chief Justice is one of seven regional heads of judiciary to issue a statement expressing confidence in the Caribbean Court of Justice.
It follows recent reports concerning internal correspondence which highlighted concerns and allegations ranging from “panel fixing” to attempts to influence the outcome of cases.
In the joint statement, the Judiciary heads said they did not consider it appropriate to comment on statements or allegations.
They did however express “grave concern” about the breach of confidentiality which resulted in the disclosure of what appear to be internal communications.
They also reaffirmed their confidence in the CCJ stating, “We remain confident in the Caribbean Court of Justice as a vital regional judicial institution and in the commitment of its judges to the principles which underpin the administration of justice throughout the Caribbean.”
The Heads of Judiciary who agreed to issue the statement are from:
- Barbados
- The Bahamas
- Belize
- Guyana
- The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC)
- Jamaica
- Trinidad and Tobago
