T&TEC launched the SPARK Initiative as part of its 80th anniversary celebrations.
Formally titled SPARK Initiative – School Partnership for Awareness, Responsibility & Knowledge, this introduced secondary school students to topics such as electrical literacy, energy conservation & efficiency, electrical safety, career pathways at T&TEC and emerging technologies.
The launch came during an event at Naparima College, San Fernando on May 17th, and was praised by Minister in the Public Utilities Ministry, Clyde Elder.
“As a Government, we understand that the future cannot be left to chance. We must actively prepare for it. That means creating policies, programmes, and opportunities that help young people become stronger, smarter, more innovative, and more prepared for the world ahead,” he said.
The inaugural installment of SPARK brought together students from secondary schools in south Trinidad, including Iere High School, Southern Academy of Seventh Day Adventists, Naparima College, Parvati Girls Hindu College and Holy Faith Convent Penal.
It included an interactive GIS experience, where they uploaded selfies to a live location point and viewed their submissions in real time on a digital map.
There were also demonstrations with drones, artificial intelligence and data analytics, the exercise showed how technology is being used to enhance the electricity service to customers.
Additionally, as part of the careers segment, students learned about résumé writing, interview preparation, and developing a polished, professional appearance through a capsule wardrobe.
