The Children’s Authority has reported that children in Trinidad and Tobago continue to face alarming levels of abuse, often at the hands of the very people meant to protect them.
Since becoming operational, the Authority says it has received between 4,200 and more than 5,400 reports of abuse annually.
The highest number was related to neglect, followed by sexual abuse, physical abuse and emotional abuse, among the most common cases.
As the Authority marks its 11th year of service, it is emphasizing that that early intervention can save lives and protect children from further harm.
Persons are encouraged to report suspected abuse immediately by calling 996 or the Police at 999.
