Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro is defending the timing of a new legal notice restricting demonstrations and protests in certain spaces.

The move followed recent gatherings to protest the decision to charge Kaia Sealy for offences allegedly linked to the incident that resulted in the death of Joshua Samaroo.

The Top Cop insisted the measure is not intended to limit the public’s right to free expression, saying while citizens have a right to protest, but must do so within the rule of law.

When asked whether he consulted with the Prime Minister or offered advice on the matter, Commissioner Guevarro did not directly reply.

Instead, he cautioned against trying cases in the court of public opinion.

The Top Cop said all the agencies involved remain independent, and insisted that everyone will ultimately get their day in court.

Meanwhile, Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander is defending members of the national security services, insisting that integrity is not for sale.

He also spoke at the launch of the new Diplomatic Security Unit this morning, during which time he urged officers to remain focused despite criticism.

Regarding the new Unit, the Minister said it forms part of Government’s efforts to stay ahead of evolving security threats through proactive policing and greater operational readiness.

He also called on the media to report on it responsibly.
