A 26-year-old Palo Seco man is in police custody as investigations continue into the death of 12-year-old Mercedez Layne of Los Iros, Erin.

Mercedez was reported missing on Saturday after she failed to arrive home following a trip from her grandfather’s residence in Rancho Quemado.

Police immediately launched a search and, after reviewing CCTV footage, located the vehicle in which she was last seen.

The vehicle was found abandoned along Beach Road, Palo Seco, shortly after 1am on Sunday.

Hours later, at about 6:43 a.m., an oilfield employee discovered the body of a young female along a well access road off Carapal Road, Erin.

The body was later identified as that of the missing child.

Investigations led to the detention of the 26-year-old suspect

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry says counselling and psychosocial support will be provided to students and staff affected by the death of Mercedez Layne.

The Ministry says it is working closely with the St Francis Erin R.C. Primary School, following the passing of the Standard Four student.

In a statement, it extended condolences to the family and described her as a caring child who loved music, art and sports.
