Guaracara Park in Marabella, South Trinidad is set for a major revival, with restoration works now officially underway to return the once-iconic sporting venue to its former glory.

The facility, long regarded as one of the country’s premier cricket and sporting grounds, has hosted numerous historic matches and memorable performances over the years.

However, it fell into a state of disrepair following the closure of the Petrotrin oil refinery in 2018, which significantly impacted the surrounding Marabella community and wider Southland economy.

The shutdown not only ended the daily activity of thousands of workers but also left a major void in sports and cultural life, with Guaracara Park previously serving as a vital hub for cricket, athletics, and community events.

Following renewed calls for its rehabilitation—including recent appeals from President of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board Azim Bassarath—work has now commenced to refurbish and restore the facility.

The redevelopment is being viewed as a critical step in reviving sporting opportunities for young athletes in the south, many of whom have been deprived of access to a top-tier venue for development and competition since its closure.

For decades, Guaracara Park played a central role in nurturing local cricketing talent and hosting regional fixtures, while also boosting economic activity in nearby communities through match-day crowds and related commerce.

Officials say the restoration effort represents not only the return of a sporting landmark, but also a broader push to reignite community pride and development in South Trinidad.
