A prisoner is now dead after an alleged assault at the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca.
According to a Guardian Media report, 48-year-old Christopher Banfield was found unresponsive in his cell around 5:30am today.
He had multiple injuries and was later pronounced dead at the facility.
Investigators have reportedly been told that Banfield had gotten into an argument with another inmate on Monday night.
It escalated into a fight, with Banfield receiving several blows to the head, face and body during the altercation.
The deceased was accused of beating his elderly father to death in June last year.
