There are plans to recruit 800 new prison officers.
This revelation came today from Justice Minister Devesh Maharaj as he spoke on the Parole Bill 2026
According to him, recruitment will get underway within the next few months, and forms part of a broader push to strengthen the prison system.
Regarding the Bill, Mr Maharaj said it will help create pathways to breaking cycles of crime.
He added that it has the support of the Judiciary, which believes rehabilitation should remain central to penal reform efforts, with parole reform initiatives that allow offenders opportunities for rehabilitation while under supervision.
