Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles-Robinson joined Wendell Eversley’s annual commemorative walk to mark the 36th anniversary of the July 27, 1990 attempted coup.
This morning’s walk, from Arima to the Red House, honoured the events surrounding the Jamaat al Muslimeen’s attempt to overthrow the elected Government of the day.
In a statement, Mrs Beckles-Robinson called on national leaders to uphold T&T’s founding democratic principles.
She said democracy must not be taken for granted and urged leaders to protect citizens’ rights, preserve public trust, and uphold the rule of law.
Mrs Beckles-Robinson also paid tribute to the 24 people who died during the attempted coup, saying the events serve as a reminder of the need to safeguard the nation’s democracy.
