The Independence Day parade is being relocated this year, with the event moving to the Queen’s Park Savannah opposite President’s House.
According to the T&T Express, Minister Phillip Alexander confirmed the change of venue for the August 31st parade, which usually takes place in and around the Grand Stand at the Savannah.
While he did not confirm the exact reason for the shift, the Minister suggested it could lead to substantial savings for the country, by avoiding the cost of removing and rebuilding the North Stand for Carnival.
Last year’s parade was not held, due to national security concerns during a State of Emergency, however Defense Minister Wayne Sturge confirmed the return of the event during this year’s Mid-Year Budget Review.
Meanwhile, MP for the area, Stuart Young is calling for details on the ongoing work.
In a social media video, he highlighted aggregate and a steam roller at the site and asked the Government to clarify if paving works will be done.
Mr Young also raised environmental concerns, saying that that “green spaces in our beloved Savannah should not be destroyed and desecrated”.
