Sapphire Export Group Director, Johann Ali, believes a recent piece of medical equipment brought into the country by his company, could be a gamechanger.

An analytical instrument called the PATHFAST has been acquired by and deployed at Doctor’s Quarters and the St. Agustine Private Hospital.

According to Mr Ali, this device is capable of providing near-immediate cardiac enzyme results for suspected heart attacks.

He spoke with 103.1FM News during the unveiling at the St Augustine Private Hospital yesterday.

In a statement, the company says, “it allows a confident rule out of suspect MI events in patients presenting with chest-pain or other symptoms of heart attack in as little as one hour leveraging the power of high-sensitivity cardiac Troponin-I (hs-cTnI) with two consecutive tests during a 1-2 hour period. The instrument is also groundbreaking by allowing a 100% rule-out of sepsis in patients by combining the results of a standard (and best assay on the market) B.R.A.H.M.S. Procalcitonin (PCT) assay with a proprietary marker called pre-sepsin (PSEP) in the Emergency Department or in the Ward, reducing the use of unnecessary antibiotics.”

Mr Ali believes if deployed widely, especially in the public sector, this device can save millions, since patients can be diagnosed more quickly.
