Methanex has officially shut down its Titan methanol plant in Point Lisas, with production ending yesterday morning.
The T&T Express reported that the company’s Managing Director Colin Bain confirmed the facility has been indefinitely idled.
This comes after the company failed to reach a new natural gas agreement with the National Gas Company, before its current contract expires in September.
In a Facebook post, former Energy Minister Stuart Young criticised the shutdown, describing it as a setback for the energy sector and blaming the Government’s handling of commercial negotiations.
Last month, Methanex announced its decision, adding that it will preserve the facility in case of a future restart.
