More than 850 wildfires are burning across Canada, sending smoke into parts of the US and triggering air quality alerts.
As of this morning, the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System recorded 858 active wildfires, with 192 classified as “out of control.”
While no deaths have been reported, officials say air quality has reached unhealthy to hazardous levels, in parts of several US states, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York and New Jersey.
Smoke is expected to intensify today across southern New England, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, lower Michigan and northern Ohio.
Officials are warning that the smoke particles could make the air unsafe to breathe, especially for vulnerable groups.
