Lionel Messi has scored against Austria to become the all-time leading scorer in the men’s FIFA World Cup.

The Argentina legend picked up his 17th and 18th tournament goals as his side registered a 2-0 win over their European counterparts.

Messi tied with Germany’s Miroslav Klose after scoring a hat-trick in Argentina’s opening World Cup match.

Klose’s record of 16 goals was set at the 2014 World Cup, which saw Germany win the coveted trophy.

Not far behind, and also in good touch so far, is France’s Kylian Mbappe, who has 14 World Cup goals so far.

France is due to play Iraq later today.
