Maxi taxi operators across Trinidad have begun a planned three-day boycott today, with an estimated 4,500 drivers expected to stay off the roads.
Secretary of the Association of Maxi Taxi Trinidad and Tobago, Vickash Kissoondath, told 103.1FM News this morning that the action was taken to highlight the reasons behind the strike.
Mr Kissoondath confirmed that a motorcade from Tarouba to Port of Spain got underway shortly after 5AM, with no passengers being transported.
He said several operators have remained off the roads, disrupting key routes including Curepe to Chaguanas and San Fernando to Chaguanas and social media reports also show clear lanes along the Priority Bus Route.
Mr Kissoondath stressed the action is not intended to hold the country to ransom, but to draw Government attention to longstanding concerns.
Among the key demands are an increase in the highway speed limit for maxi taxis from 65 to 80km per hour, stronger measures to tackle crime, a crackdown on illegal PH taxi operations, and payment of outstanding monies owed for transporting schoolchildren.
