The Santa Rosa First Peoples Community is again calling on Government to retain the name “Piarco”, as part of any new title for the Piarco International Airport.
The group says it is not opposed to honouring national contributors, but insists meaningful consultation with Indigenous communities must take place before any final decision is made.
In a statement, Chief Ricardo Bharath Hernandez says the name represents an important link this country’s Indigenous history and identity.
He adds that removing it entirely would contribute to the erosion of First Peoples heritage and is urging authorities to preserve the Indigenous connection embodied in the name Piarco.
