Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says Government is undertaking a feasibility study to determine which academic faculties can be housed at the University of the West Indies South Campus in Debe.

Speaking during a tour of the facility on Monday, she received updates on restoration works and tendering processes aimed at bringing the campus into operation.

The Prime Minister revealed that proposed programmes under consideration include artificial intelligence and national security training.

“Areas that we are also paying attention to are a forensic science complex, a national security training facility, training in law enforcement technology, and emerging fields such as artificial intelligence. These are some areas we are exploring to have located here,” she said.

She also dismissed speculation about relocating existing faculties to the Debe campus.

“There was an erroneous newspaper story that we were moving the Law Faculty out of St Augustine,” she said.

“Why would we want to move a fully functional law campus on the St Augustine campus, and move everybody down here. We plan to have parallel work going on at the same time.”

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar described the project as a major opportunity for South Trinidad and a key step in expanding access to higher education nationwide.
