The EMA is marking Desertification and Drought Day 2026 by highlighting its BIOREACH Project, which is restoring ecosystems and promoting sustainable land use.
The major environmental project, supported by US$3.75 million in international financing, aims to restore damaged land and improve climate resilience in T&T.
EMA Managing Director Dr Joth Singh praised the importance of the work, highlighting the need to protect water resources and support long-term climate resilience.
One key achievement is the restoration of about 5.5 kilometres of the Jagruma River banks in Plum Mitan, where native vegetation was planted to reduce erosion, improve water quality and provide natural protection against drought and flooding.
The project has also delivered social benefits, with 74 people employed in planting, maintenance and environmental monitoring activities.
