Police in the Port of Spain Division have reported an increase in copper theft, including telecommunications cables.

This follows concerns raised by DOMA President Gregory Aboud about copper theft from businesses in the capital, including $2 million worth of air-conditioning and electrical equipment.

According to a Guardian Media report, preliminary data shows more reports of copper theft during the first half of this year, compared with the same period in 2025.

Police said most of the reported incidents occurred in areas including Laventille, Beetham and Sea Lots.

In response, police have increased patrols and surveillance in targeted commercial areas and are working with businesses and utility providers to prevent further thefts.

The public is also being urged to report any incidents of copper theft.
